New Zealand victorious in rain-interrupted match
Aimee Watkins' side got off to a winning start at the ICC Women's World Twenty20 2010 at Warner Park, after securing a win over India. It was the fourth match of the women's tournament and another closely fought one at that.
India had started well against last year's ICC World Twenty20 runners-up when spinner Gouhar Sultana uprooted the stumps of opener Watkins for eight runs and it was left to Suzie Bates (32) and Nicola Browne (24) to put runs on the board for the White Ferns. None of the team appeared to fire - notably number three batter Sara McGlashan making only 15 before she was stumped by Sulakshana Naik.
Diana David was by far the pick of the bowlers for either side with an impressive 4-27, in a haul that included the Player of the Match, Bates.
After the innings break the India side came out fighting with former India captain Mithali Raj setting a fine example after number two batter Poonam Raut departed for a duck. Raj made 44 off 36 balls in an innings that included six boundaries. Only Raj, Naik and Amita Sharma managed to make it into double figures with the latter of the three finishing the day 28 not out.
When it came to the final over of the match India required at least 18 runs and Sharma tried her hardest to defend the total, smashing a six to square leg and hitting the scoreboard in the process. Sharma's valiant effort fell short with India requiring 12 runs off the last ball, an impossible feat and thus handing Watkins and her side its first victory.
The game was halted twice during the course of India's innings due to an heavy rainfall coming across from the island of Nevis - although play stopped briefly in both the 13th and 14th overs, no time was lost.
